Hashimoto's

I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's and Hypothyroidism in August 2012. I had a total thyroidectomy in April 2013, and have been struggling to balance my hormones.  I have done a lot of research into what is considered optimal treatment, and have discovered that most doctors are not very informed when it comes to this disease.

Hashimoto's Thyroid Disease is an autoimmune disease. The immune system will continually attack the thyroid gland until it is completely destroyed.  As the gland is killed off, you become hypothyroid.  It also commonly causes an enlarged gland, nodules, and an increased risk for thyroid cancer.  Every single cell in your body relies on thyroid hormones to function. The thyroid is the metabolic center. I had my thyroid gland completely removed, but there is always some tissue left behind to protect the parathyroid glands and the vocal chords. I will be relying on medication for the rest of my life in order for my body to work properly. Unfortunately, having your thyroid removed does not solve the problem of Hashimoto's.  I still have elevated levels of antibodies. These antibodies continue to attack, causing the thyroid hormones not to properly enter into my cells.  It is very difficult to get rid of, or even lesson, symptoms of this disease. It takes a lot of communication with your doctor, as most importantly a doctor who will actually listen.  Treatment is different for each individual and takes a lot of trial and error to find what works best.

I have been on Synthroid since being diagnosed with this horrible disease.  I did not feel like it has been working, so my doctor switched me to another synthetic med called Tirosint.  This particular medication is in the form of a liquid capsule, allowing it to be absorbed by the body better and quicker.  It is also free of additives and fillers.  Unfortunately, this medication was worse than Synthroid for me. I decided to order ThyroGold, which is an over the counter supplement that is natural dessicated thyroid from New Zealand grass-fed cows.  This medication is actually making a difference!

The hardest part of this disease is the fact that I look perfectly healthy on the outside, when I'm actually suffering on the inside.  I'm in almost constant pain and feel absolutely exhausted the majority of the time. Hopefully one day, people will understand the toll this disease takes, both physically and mentally.
